Living Sensors!

We poured water on what was apparently dead moss. Within seconds, this species hydrates, turns green, and begins photosynthesis. Hydrochemical reaction? It is being used to sense small amounts of precipitation using the camera. It actually is a more sensitive technique than using precipitation sensors.

Wow, that is really cool! I wonder how long it can go without water and still be able to recover once moisture arrives.

The resident told us a brief story of a professor who had a small amount put away in a desk for years. A drop of water and voila! She also said that the moss needs the rock for continued survival.
